The French partner in the Workplace Learning partnership project, the
University of Strasbourg, works closely with two enterprises. The first
is the Endress and Hauser Group and the second is Atelco. This case
study is focused on Atelco.
Atelco is located in the
Upper-Rhine region of Alsace and presently employees about 25 staff. It
was established in 1933 in the machine tool industry sector as a
sub-contractor in mechanical engineering and sheet-metal work. since
then it has diversified and the present main business activities are
the production of prototypes and special machinery, structural welding
and sheet-metal engineering.
Like other SMEs in the sector,
Atelco has developed learning partnership promotion with different
sector based vocational training providers in the Alsace region,
especially with the CFAI, the Apprentice Training Centre for the
Industry in Gubwiller (Upper-Rhine - Alsace).

Atelco supports both formal apprenticeship training and continuing
vocational training as well as facilitating informal, work based
learning. In this interview the head of the production department,
Georges Schlag, talks about the apprenticeship training programme.

About 30% of apprentices progress to permanent employment in the
enterprise. Of the remainder, 90% find employment within six months.
The second interview is Marc Simon who is and assembler-turner at
Atelco. He has worked for over 25 years at ATELCO and talks about
informal work based learning he has undertaken at the company.
